My name is Johnnie Mac and because I’ve spent over 15 years busking successfully all over the world in exotic places like Paris, Spain, Italy, London, Budapest, Prague (to name just a few), I’ve been able to offer guidance and advice to aspiring street performers who I’ve bumped into along my travels.
After being hounded for years to put my tips into a book specifically to help more buskers from further afield, I finally put pen to paper and wrote my most valuable tips to help other entertainers find quick and easy, long-lasting ways to develop a successful career.
As a busker I know how frustrating and time consuming it is to try and find specific and accurate busking info, so I’ve put all my experience and know-how together to make it easy for you.
This is the complete opposite to what everyone else was expecting. I remember how my family and friends all laughed when I told them I was going to busk my way around the world. They told me I was absolutely crazy to throw away my career and that I should stay in my well paying, full-time, secure government job.
Some of my closest (concerned) friends were quick to tell me that no one would be interested in an unknown Aussie guy playing original music on an acoustic guitar. They said if I had any chance of success, I would have to do something incredibly rare and exciting like singing, playing guitar, juggling chainsaws and blowing a didgeridoo out of both my nostrils – preferably all at the same time!
I didn’t know how I was going to do it. All I knew was that I didn’t want to keep working in a tedious 9-5 job for one minute longer.
A few months later, I – just your average Aussie guy, playing his own music on an acoustic guitar, had busked from Australia to London to Amsterdam to France to Eastern Europe to Spain (and the list goes on) making more money than any of my friends were earning in full time employment.
I was travelling the world, meeting amazing people, making new friends, getting job offers in the entertainment industry and living the life of my dreams doing what I love to do (creating music and performing live).
All this AND making a fortune… in fact, more than triple what I was making in the job I left behind.
Over the years, I’ve made many busking mistakes and learnt the rules – often the hard way. If I had known what I do now, when I first started busking, performing on the streets would have been a breeze! Unlike you, I had no books explaining all the in’s and out’s, no one showing me where to start busking, telling me what to do, when to busk and when not to busk etc, etc, etc. As a consequence, when I first started busking, my earnings were pitiful, but as I learnt my craft, my income increased dramatically to the point where I wouldn’t discuss how much I made with my friends working in crappy jobs or with other buskers doing the same solo acoustic performance because I felt embarrassed to reveal the extent of my success.
Incidentally, I was also making a lot more money than my friends were making in their boring full time jobs (yep – the ones who told me that busking was a silly idea). It just didn’t seem believable, so I kept it to myself. Now that my secrets are exposed, you can benefit from my experiences in the easiest job I’ve ‘NEVER’ had.
